Abomination 7" front cover. I guess as the title implies, that this image is the front cover to the 7" EP "Abomination" by the Chicago punk-rock band, The Rotten Fruits. This is officially the first drawing I got money for, which made me really uncomfortable, but I did work a lot of work into it at the time. How'd I land such a gig, you may ask? Well, I know the singer from way back, natch. We're old high school mates, don't you know. I actually created this image back in August of 2004, because they had a deal to produce the record for that fall, but some sort of financial unpleasantness befell somebody or other and it got delayed. The basic concept behind the image was my friend the singer's ("Germ") and the guitarist ("Ears"). I sent them a few rough sketches and they liked this idea. I looked at a few photos of the band members to try and get decent cute, cartoony likenesses, which I think I did okay. From left to right: Rabbit the drummer (no longer with the band), Ears the guitarist, Germ vocalist, and Liz bass guitarist (yeah Germ, Ears and Liz all signed my free copy, cool beans, yes? Yet another perk of knowing the singer.). Those are all outfits they actually own, by the way. Fun fact there. I learned some interesting techniques with my art programs creating this thing, but sadly I have learned quite a few since then as well. If only I had had the time between then and when it was ACTUALLY produced to work on it more, it could have come out so much cooler. Not to say that this isn't all that cool, I mean it IS, if for the fact that it is something I made that is appearing on something people can actually BUY and nothing else. I suck at backgrounds, did I mention? Hence the lack of a decent one. The backgrounds here were all created on the computer. There is a tool in Corel Photo Paint 11 to created the stained glass window effect. I did the graffiti by hand with a spray pain tool. The graffiti, in case you were wondering says: "killed your baby" (from the Misfits song "Last Cress"), "Hot Tramp" (from the David Bowie song "Rebel, Rebel", one of Germ's faves), "who r you?" (from the Siouxsie and the Banshees song "Face to Face"), "for a good time", "red rum" (from "The Shining"), "are you there god?", "fuck u", and um, some other things I can't remember anymore. The logos on it were added in after by Ears. I believe he used a font style I suggested to write out "Abomination." I had designed them a fancy Rotten Fruits logo, something rather "Nevermind the Bullocks"-y, but Ears decided it took away from the main art too much. Thanks, mate. The back is a photo of some pink frosted donuts, which is sort of a in-joke, that Ears took. If you want to check out The Rotten Fruits, visit their website: HERE (you can listen to mp3s!!! Oh and see some ANCIENT art I did for them five years ago before I had my style down, er, I still don't, really). If you're interested in buying a copy of this 7", check out Criminal IQ Records: HERE (it goes for $4.99 US dollars, not including any applicable tax). Wow, what a long write up. Oh, and it looks waaaaaay better in person than this crappy scan lets on. Trust me.
