:: Penn & Teller's Bullshit! season 1 ::
by William the Bloody
Penn & Teller's Bullshit! is a cable television series about uncovering the bullshit which lies everywhere. Covering everything from mediums to alien abduction to apocalyptic predictions they aren't afraid to confront the experts and call shenanigans when they can't produce the scientific proof. The series uses everything from contrary evidence, their own demonstrations and snarky comedic comments to prove the malarkey of it all and declare that something is indeed, bullshit!
The Good: In case you don't know who Penn & Teller are, they are in fact a couple of guys with a magic act with regular appearances in Las Vegas. They do declare in the first episode that they make no claims of actually possessing magical abilities or hiding the fact that their routines are all in fact tricks and misdirection. The concepts, claims, and practices that they debunk on their show state that they're factual and totally real and that is where Penn & Teller draw the line. Don't go around claiming you can speak to the dead and this is totally for real when you are in fact making it all up. This is not only deceitful but also predatory and despicable behaviour and Penn & Teller are here to expose all of these snake oil salesmen for the bullshitters that they are. This series is pretty humourous as our hosts don't believe in sparing their targets any amount of humiliation with ridiculing comments and their own controlled experiments (not so easy to do a psychic dead relative reunion when you don't have any time to prepare, is it?).
The Bad: Sometimes they get so wrapped up in making fun of someone, they themselves get off of the "where's the evidence?" track. Occasionally, innocent people wind up looking stupid all in the name of proving a point. There is one episode in season 1 all about sex, sexual enhancement, et cetera and as such features many, many, many nude and explicit images. I know that sort of thing can offend some people.
When I finished viewing season 1, I had enjoyed it greatly. Because they keep changing topics, it takes a lot for episodes to get old on you and as a result this is one that can easily be viewed back to back to back. Watching them disprove things like Ouija boards and Feng Shui is humourous, but I would caution the politically or religious minded that various topics like Creationism and environmental fanaticism go under the microscope are are called onto the carpet. It's good fun and spirited debate with a moral and if nothing else, gives you something to think about.
