:: Dexter season 3 ::

by William the Bloody

Dexter Morgan is still a well-regarded blood analyst for Miami Metro Police. He also still kills people. Well, people who deserve it, anyway. On one of his typical routine kills (a drug dealer who got away with killing two college girls), Dexter is surprised to find his intended victim already engaged in a life or death struggle. His entrance causes a distraction and the target gets away, but the other man comes at Dexter with a knife, which he turns fatally back onto his attacker. This is the first time Dexter has killed anyone without any sort of preparation and he has no idea who he is. When he is called in to investigate this scene the next day, Dexter discovers the identity of his mystery attacker as none other the brother of the highly respected prosecutor, Miguel Prada. It is assumed that the killer is the drug dealer (the one Dexter intended to kill), and Miguel is thirsty for vengeance. After exhaustive detective work by Dexter's sister Deb and a small trail of bread crumbs from Dexter himself, the police have some leads on finding the dealer, but Dexter gets to him first and he is quickly dispatched. However, Miguel puts the pieces together on his own and goes to the dealer with every intention of murdering him for killing his brother. Dexter and Miguel almost literally bump into each other at the scene and after some quick convincing explanations, Dexter convinces Miguel that he was just making sure his evidence was solid, was surprised by the dealer and had to defend himself. Miguel is convinced and thanks Dexter for putting the murderer down. Soon, Miguel starts a relationship with Dexter and begins feeding Dexter information on others who have gotten away with murder just to see what would happen, and when they start disappearing, well Miguel is a smart guy. As a prosecuting attorney, he has seen all too often murderers and violent criminals get away due to legal technicalities and is all to eager to join Dexter in meting out justice the old fashioned way. Has Dexter finally found a friend?

The Good: I cannot say enough how amazing this show is. It is so well written and acted, it is ridiculous. Every actor perfectly personifies their character and every aspect is absolutely convincing. The same ensemble of characters are back, with a couple of new additions, and everyone plays so well off each other, too. Jimmy Smits enters this season as Dexter's new best friend Miguel and he does an excellent job. He really sells it. Dexter is still a great character and watching him struggle through normal day-to-day social situations with varying degrees of success still amuses me. I really love how the season is scripted: every subplot fit together like a perfect puzzle, just waiting for the big picture reveal in the finale. The police cases, Miguel and Dexter's growing friendship, Dexter's relationship with Rita, the other characters' lives, it's all so good. The murders, the mystery, the episode ending cliffhangers, and one GREAT bait-and-switch I never saw coming just all come together for one terrific season.

The Bad:  Not one goddamned thing! Well, I kinda wish it were longer!

I. Loved. It. I'm really glad they managed to keep the premise fresh in new and different ways and I cannot wait to see what they do next season!

A+
