:: Dr. Who 2006 season ::
by William the Bloody
Following the Doctor's painful regeneration in the 2005 season finale... The Doctor is ill and the TARDIS comes crashing back to Rose's home. Tragic Timelord regenerations need time to convalesce, and unfortunately while the Doctor lies resting, Britain looks to the skies as a hostile alien race make their conquering intentions know by hypnotizing one-third of the Earth's population into taking up suicidal positions on rooftops. Needless to say, the Doctor eventually comes around and challenges the alien leader to a dual to the rights to Earth. The Doctor wins and the Earth rejoices, but Britain's prime minister allows the use of a newly developed weapon codenamed Torchwood to be used on the fleeing alien hostiles and they are vapourized. The Doctor loses faith in Harriet Jones, the Prime Minister, and she loses the next election. After Christmas dinner, Rose and The Doctor leave Earth once again to resume their travels, with Rose fully confident that even though he wears a different face, he's still the same Doctor she knows and loves.
The Good: I was a bit wobbly and sad knowing that Chris Eccleston had left the starring role to a new bloke, but after seeing him in two episodes, David Tennant feels just right. Tennant has his Doctor traits down and pulls them off fluidly. The Doctor and Rose continue to have a superb Doctor-Companion relationship. I want to shake the hand of the man who pulled off episode 3, "School Reunion" for bringing back classic companions Sarah Jane Smith and K9. You heard me: K-freakin-NINE! The Sarah-Doctor-Rose triangle was simply sublime. And props for using Anthony Stewart Head as the villain there. Wow. This season FINALLY gave us looks at other planets and it did not disappoint. LOVE the old-school feel of the two parter "The Impossible Planet" and "The Satan Pit". Those were totally wicked and really had the old series style. The make up effects for the servant creatures known as the Ood for those episodes were terrific as well as in the premiere episode "New Earth" for the cat people. And where the 2005 season brought us the Dalek resurgence, this season brings... wait for it.... CYBERMEN! You heard me, bitch. And these Cybermen are cool-ass looking, too! We're not talking guys in shiny silver lycra suits with helmets. No, these things are sculpted and kick ass! I love everything about them right down to the stomping sound effect they make when they march in flank to the voice filter on the actors. Wicked. Oh and the finale episode, "Doomsday," is not to be missed! Can you say fan service? Squeee!!
The Bad: As well as Tennent does as the Doctor, he's still no Eccleston. Tennant does not suck by any stretch of the imagination, he's just not as good. Even though we finally get other planet scapes, still more than half of this season took place on Earth, which was disappointing. Seems like most of the classic series hardly went to Earth at all, and now it's most of what we see. I was rather disappointed that brief 2005 companion Captain Jack did not return. Fingers crossed that he'll turn up down the line. I found that the episode "Love & Monsters" presented some continuity issues what with these people obsessed about the Doctor and how they've all seen him decades apart, but he always looks the same. Excuse me? What about he regenerations? David Tennant incarnation ALWAYS had Rose by his side, so where was she in Elton's flashbacks? And don't say maybe it hasn't happened yet what with the time travel and all, but the Dpctor remembered being there, so it had. Nyeh.
All in all, the 2006 season proved a great watch. The two-parter episodes left gripping cliff hangers and I was compelled to watch every week. Many classic elements of the series were brought in so for the hardcore fans, you'll be loving it the whole way. All I can say is after the finale, I'm super curious to see what direction the series will take should it carry on.
