:: Today's soundtrack: Sisters of Mercy "No Time to Cry" ::

I was looking around on the internet recently. I happened to notice that a few people on their splash pages try to be cute when they list the requirements for viewing. The put things like "an open mind" or "a sense of humor" right there next to the screen resolution and color requirements.

One such site had included "respect" in her list of requirements. That's all well and good, but.... I started out reading her tagboard and someone commented how they liked her site layout and content, but it was just too bad she liked Good Charlotte so much. Well, this comment apparently spawned outrage in the webmistress. She commented in her own tagboard right at the guy saying that didn't he notice the "respect" in the requirements? and that he was a loser. She also went on to make a side comment next to her tagboard to point out her response to other viewers. She ALSO mentioned it in her blog that people who don't agree with her should just click the "X" button and that she was working on banning this guy from leaving messages anywhere else on her site.

This barrage of responses to one guy's personal opinion just didn't sit well with me. So the viewers are supposed to "respect" her and her thoughts and opinions, but she is in no way obligated to respect her viewers and their thoughts? It wasn't even as though this guy had totally slammed Good Charlotte.

This whole thing started me to think about free speech in general and how so many people hold it to a double standard. They want the ability to be able to say what they please, but also to silence those who do not hold the same opinions. That just ain't how it works people.

Keeping this in mind, I'd like to take this opportunity to say that I am, too, opinionated. I believe in a woman's right to choose. I think prostitution and marijuana should be legal. I also believe in gay marriage and their right to adopt. I think that our children are valuable and that education should be our nation's highest priority. I also think that The Cure is the greatest band ever and that Good Charlotte sucks ass.

I also believe in YOUR right to disagree and that ALL opinions are valid and every individual is entitled to them, no matter what I, Congress, or the general public may think.
