Are you aspiring to be a Buffy fan-fic writer? Sure you are. In case you need some tips, here are the tried and true Buffy components.
Buffy has important/prophetic dreams. (Welcome to the Hellmouth, Surprise, Graduation Day part 2, more)
Xander eats/almost eats some evidence. (Earshot, Bad Eggs, Doublemeat Palace)
Joyce makes an unknowingly poignant remark. ( Passion, Graduation Day part 2)
An apocalypse is about to happen. (The Harvest, Prophecy Girl, Innocence, Becoming part 2, The Zeppo, more)
Somebody is always pining for somebody else. ie Xander pines for Buffy, Willow pines for Xander, Buffy pines for Angel, Giles pines for Jenny Calendar, Xander pines for Cordelia, Willow pines for Oz, Spike pines for Drusilla, Buffy pines for Angel again....
Giles cleans his glasses.
A good guy goes bad. (Innocence, Consequences, Hells Bells, Seeing Red)
There is a scene in a graveyard.
The good guys do research involving stacks of books.
There is an artifact kept in a crypt. (What's My Line? part 1, Revelations)
There are monks guarding something important. (I Robot You Jane, No Place Like Home, more)
Giles says "Good Lord."
Dawn gets captured by the bad guys. (Spiral, All the Way, Once More, With Feeling)
There is a somewhat complex magical ritual. (The Witch, Becoming part 2, Dopplegangland, Something Blue, Primeval, more)
A snake-like demon must be fought. (Reptile Boy, Graduation Day part 2, Band Candy, Shadow)
Xander makes a geeky pop culture reference.
Anya makes a straightforward comment that makes others uncomfortable.
And there you have it. If you want your Buffy story fit in there with the ones by the pros take notice of their patterns. You don't even have to be that obsessive about it because I just did the hard part for you! Now you have no excuse; Get writin'! (But I'm mainly talking to YOU. Oh you know who you are. Yes you do.)
