::Today's soundtrack: Trans X "Living on Video" ::

Two things that I like: anime and music. Sometimes fun to combine! Many fans of anime have taken the initiative and edited their favourite anime to one of their favourite songs to create fun music videos. When I'm bored, feel like music, and in a YouTube-y mood, sometimes I search them out. Most of the time I'll look for ones that use an anime I have watched or at the very least, a song that I know, but other times I just watch one at random and can be pleasantly surprised. I've found some cool anime and great songs this way!

Well, you may have guessed where this is going. I'm going to link to some fan made anime music videos (or AMVs for short) and you're going to watch them because I've cherry picked out some winners for you.

STANDARD DISCLAIMER: The following post contains links to YouTube. YouTube may, at its own discretion, remove these videos on the basis of infringement. I recommend these VIDEOS and NOT whatever assholery takes place within the asinine comment section. Read those at your own peril.

First up:

Anime: Princess Tutu  Song: "Hall Om Mig" by Nanne Gronvall

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHZqxecCukg

This one, I had never heard the song or seen the anime, but this video had been posted and reposted, and referred to by others as their music video making inspiration, so I decided to check it out. Princess Tutu is obviously a "girl" anime, featuring a magical girl heroine and everything, and the song is in Swedish, but that doesn't detract from the fantastic editing done here. Its creator, Marissa Panaccio, has done a wonderful job of cutting in time to the music and using scenes from the anime that also go in time to the tunes as well. Not enough AMV makers do that, in my opinion. This Princess Tutu video is definitely one of the best out there, and it was my admiration for it that lead me to another by the same creator, this next video.

Anime: Last Exile  Song: "Running Up That Hill" by Within Temptation

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoQH1vBNdEg

I did know the song, but not this version of it, but I was completely unfamiliar with this anime as well. The editing style is different for this one, utilizing split screens and layering "panels" over a "backdrop" but it all works very well with the music and subject matter, and she still manages to move everything seamlessly in time to the music. I was intrigued by this video so much that I rented the anime and wound up buying the song.

Anime: Shamaniac Princess  Song: "Imaginary (Origin version)" by Evanescence

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIduh4yGgwg

This one is actually the VERY FIRST fan made anime music video I had ever seen. I actually downloaded via a PTP thingy waaaaay back in like 2002 or something. I had no idea what it was; I was trying to broaden my anime knowledge-base, and Netflix wasn't around yet. Also, this was before the Evanescence album Fallen had come out, so I didn't even know what this song was, only that I loved it very much. I like this video because they do a pretty good job of moving everything in time to the music, but they do an excellent job of using images that correspond to the lyrics in "Imaginary."

Anime: Serial Experiments: Lain  Song: "Living Dead Girl" by Rob Zombie

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbLOCXZvaDE

Very nice image-to-music stuff going on here. They also cut things in time and to correspond to the lyrics a bit. It's a shame that it appears that the synch is slightly off on this one, as I had downloaded this via PTP ages ago and it synchs much better.

Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist  Song: "Hollow" by Submersed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbhaADAZHJI

This one I have to give you a great big ol' SPOILER ALERT on it. Sure all AMVs have some degree of spoilerness to them, but unless you have seen the anime, for the most part you don't know too much about what's going on. This video on the other hand, condenses the major plot to entire series of Fullmetal Alchemist down to 4 minutes. It is really artistically done and a fine song choice which emphasizes the overall feelings behind the series.

Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist  Song: "Tenth Man Down" by Nightwish

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SayRzntxUxk&feature=related

Yes, yet another Fullmetal Alchemist based video; I just really like Fullmetal Alchemist, okay? A great song about war using one of the ancillary themes of the series being a never-ending war created by persons unknown to serve their own purposes. A beautiful song with some sweet video edits.

Anime: Now and Then, Here and There Song: "Zombie" by The Cranberries

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh1djGcSU5k

This is really the PERFECT song to pair up with this anime, and the video really doesn't disappoint. They may go a bit over the top with the red filters, but other than that, finely edited.

Okay, I think I'll wrap this up for now, with everyone thinking I'm an even bigger geeky-nerd than before. Hope you enjoyed these fan made videos, and if you have some faves of your own, please do post link in the comments!
