Our founder, Sir Bloody William Salutations, traveler of The Internets! Welcome to William's Bloody Hell, so named after our founder, Sir Bloody William. He is seen in the likeness above in a rare, 19th century woodcut. This image was rumoured to have been commissioned after a bout of unpleasantness in the White Chapel district of London. :: Today's soundtrack: Soft Cell "Tainted Love (Extended Version)" ::

As a fully grown and, ahem, mature man, I am not shy to voice my appreciation for cartoons (witness my recent plea for a Daria DVD release). I don't know what it is about them, but for some reason a new cartoon can be about almost anything and I'll have at least a small urge to want to see it, as opposed to live action, where I can write something off as unwatchable from a single advert. I suppose that new primetime cartoons are fairly rare here in the United States, that if a new one premiers on network television, it has already gone through a rigorous screening process to get the greenlight to begin with. All this being said, I wasn't really looking forward to Family Guy when it first came out waaaaaay back in the late 1990s. The humour just seemed so low brow and distasteful. And at the start, yeah it was, but then quite a few television shows need to get the first half a season out before they find their true voice. So, it wasn't until it was cancelled and rebroadcast in syndication that I really got a good, solid appreciation for it.

These days, I truly cannot get enough Family Guy. If there's nothing else on, but someone's showing Family Guy reruns, I'm good. Other than the fact that it is a cartoon, you might be asking, what else is there for Mr. William the Bloody to like? Well, I'll tell you:

Peter's continuous fist fight against the Giant Chicken. I'm looking forward to that running gag to show up at least once a season. It's classic.

That time Peter bought a crate of ipecac syrup and Peter, Brian, Chris and Stewie all drank some under the idea that the last to throw up would get the last piece of pie. Yes, it's a joke which revolves around bodily functions, which I normally find to be crude and not funny at all, but this bit is pure genius. "Who wants chowder?"

Two words: James. Woods. Oh man, he must have been quite the sport to portray himself in such a way. "Ooooh! Piece of candy!"

Also, Adam West for being a really, really good sport. I can't believe the stuff he let's them write for him some of the time. "Find the rest of my Lite Brite pegs! My name's not 'Adam We'! Or is it? What number did you dial? Don't call here again!! Nobody messes with Adam We!"

Because Peter thought he'd cheer Cleveland up by singing "Rock Lobster." So random it's hilarious.

The pedophiliac Mr. Herbert just never gets old.

As well as that guy with the moustache and the southern accent. They have recently taken to using is silly sounding drawl in unlikely characters such as the Queen Alien from Aliens as well as the shark from Jaws, and I love it. "Hey. I'm gonna eat 'cha. I'm gonna eat that hairy leg. I'm gonna eat that other one, too. I can see right up in them shorts. Got lots of rows of teeth to chew you with. Dun-na, Dun-na, Dun-na. Oh, I did eat a fat kid on a raft earlier. That's OK though, I have been swimming a lot."

There was a two part episode where Brian got over an addiction and then left to California to find himself. The second episode's "Previously on Family Guy" features a montage of classic, generic over blown plots from the 1980s and it's brilliant. "In all my years as a research scientist, I have never seen a virus replicate this quickly!" "What do you mean 'cut the blue wire'? They're ALL blue!!"

Oh man, Ollie Williams on the Channel 5 news. He is freaking terrific. "And now let's go to Ollie Williams with the Blaccu-weather Forecast. Ollie?" "IT GOIN' RAIN!!" "Thanks Ollie."

Those zany Vaudevillians. They crack me up with their crazy lingo. Too bad Stewie killed them.

When Lois learns martial arts and Peter provokes Zod, Ursa and Non into a fight and they get thrown through the bar window and into the Phantom Zone. Awesome.

When Stewie teases Brian about his novel, I can't get enough.

IT'S PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME!

That nonsequitor with Don Knotts surrounded by "too many ostriches" had me in stitches and I don't know why.

The hour long "Blue Harvest" special was one of the greatest things anyone has ever done. Period.

The 80s references, good lord, the EIGHTIES REFERENCES! They never stop!!

And yeah, I don't know if you noticed, but so many odd and random situations makes the series pretty damn quotable, and I'm a man who loves his quotes. Nearly everything that happens to me reminds me of a Family Guy, Simpsons, or South Park quote. Pretty damn impressive for Family Guy to get in the top three like that. So, why wouldn't I like Family Guy? It clearly has it all. In fact, why are you reading this when you could be watching it right now??

William the Bloody (lucky there's a family guy)
