Our founder, Sir Bloody William Salutations, traveler of The Internets! Welcome to William's Bloody Hell, so named after our founder, Sir Bloody William. He is seen in the likeness above in a rare, 19th century woodcut. This image was rumoured to have been commissioned after a bout of unpleasantness in the White Chapel district of London. :: Today's soundtrack: The Rolling Stones "Tattoo You" ::

So, who here has a tattoo? I won't lie; I have one. I got it a few years ago, now, but it was a design I had had in my head for years. This is something I feel is important, when it comes to tattoos. It should be something you've thought about for a good long while before you actually get it done.

When I had gone to get mine, I had walked in and asked for one, but the artist wouldn't take me; it was appointment only. This is something that I think is very smart. How many people get drunk of their rockers and decide to get tattoos, only to wake up the next day with their right butt cheek in stinging pain and not even remember it? Sure, the artist may be losing a few bucks because of this, but think of the number of people who have retained their dignity in exchange.

There are of course those goof balls who just think that getting a tattoo would be cool and go and pick something out of the artists book. A tattoo is going to be there forever, you know. FOREVER. Don't just flip through a book for something you think is nice, make an appointment, and then there it is for all of time. It should really be something you feel strongly about. A flaming skull may look cool, but does it really hold a meaning or show an aspect of yourself?  I hate to say this, but this is mostly done by women. They go and look in a book and get a tattoo of a flower, butterfly or fairy for no reason other than it's pretty or cute. I actually asked a girl about her fairy tattoo once, and when I asked her why she said "I like fairies." That's nice. Will you still like them 40 years from now, when that breast you put it on is sagging down to your navel? Sorry if that seems a bit gross, but it's the truth.

If you can, have something completely original designed. Choosing an image out of a book just lessens the personal touch a tattoo should have. Not creative or artistic? Ask a friend to design one for you, or tell the artist what you're looking for and have him draw up some samples. Granted, these usually cost more than what's in the book, but wouldn't you rather have something permanently inscribed in your flesh that was EXACTLY what you wanted than settling for less?

I just think a tattoo should hold some importance to you, as a person, and not some flight of fancy. Some people get tattoos to represent loved ones. This is a fine idea, especially when it's a family member like your children or siblings, just be wary of doing this for lovers, unless you know it's for the long haul. Tattoos can be used to express parts of your personality as well, like your country's flag if you're patriotic or the logo of an organization you support. Tattoos are also great for commemorating an event in your life. Former alcoholic celebrating over a year's sobriety? Joined the military? Graduated college? Survived cancer? Won an Olympic medal? These are all life changing events which no one would question a significant tattoo. A tattoo to celebrate the night you drank 37 beers on the other hand...
