Something which has a tendency to bother me is when people speak an acronym incorrectly. You probably do not know what I mean by this. Well, here are a few examples.
People will often say "he has contracted the HIV virus." Well, I hate to break it to you, but the V in HIV stands for virus! So you just said "he has contracted the human immunodeficiency virus virus." Reporters on the television say this sort of thing all of the time! Seriously, keep an ear open if you're passing by a newscast about HIV. Someone is bound to say it!
Another one commonly desecrated is ATM. How often have you heard someone say "I've got to stop by the ATM machine for more cash"? have you all forgotten what ATM stands for? Automated Teller MACHINE. Stop saying Automated Teller Machine machine! This is what you are doing and it makes you sound like an idiot!
The biggest offender, and entire reason I am bringing this up is this:
I was watching one of DC's animated direct to rental movies (which are usually quite good and worth seeing, by the by) when I noticed their logo. Now, I don't know whose fault this is. The design company who made the logo or some asshat at DC, but clearly SOMEBODY has no idea what DC stands for. That's right, DC is an initialsim, and it stands for Detective Comics. So, yes, the logo tag line essentially says Detective Comics Comics. See, I don't know if the design company was told exactly what to write there or if they took it upon themselves to include it (mainly because the comic books produced by DC only have the DC circle-star logo and NOT the tag line on them), either way, though, you would think that someone working at DC would know this sort of thing, wouldn't they? I mean, it's their company; they should know something of its history, wouldn't you think? This bothers me most because of that. When people inappropriately say "ATM machine" or somesuch, they are an individual who had no part in the creation of such a device. DC, on the other hand, are spreading this themselves. This is their company and they are inadvertently encouraging people to say "Detective Comics Comics." Why on Earth would they do that? It makes no sense! If there are employees at DC who have no idea what the letters stand for, then they need to be educated so that they will not approve paying a design company for a redundant logo which will in turn spread ignorance to the masses. And you know? This goes for any professional out there. If you're going to be saying an acronym on the news or a scientist and relaying information in such a way where people are expecting facts, then make sure your are saying and using them correctly. IT'S YOUR DUTY. Pretty please? It's for the betterment of all mankind, you know!
