My Verizon home page where I log into my e-mail and such has a news headlines section for US News, Business News and Entertainment News. Lately, like the past few months or so, I've been reading the US News headlines and they almost always have something to do with shoot outs, murders, and death. Right now, there are headlines posted that read "Colorado town mourns teen killed in siege" and "Wisconsin town grapples with principal death." Both of these cases have to do with students who brought handguns to school. The Colorado town had a teenage boy hold five girls hostage in a classroom and he shot one in the head when she tried to escape. In Wisconsin, a fifteen year old shot the principal over a reprimand he had given him.

What the fuck is happening? Yes, I know high school can suck big time. Sometimes it feels like the teachers are singling you out for punishments or that girls don't talk to you and how everyone laughed at you that one time and it was humiliating, but it's high school! It's FINITE. High school doesn't last forever! More often than not the high school hottie everyone wanted will wind up knocked up by 19 and be living in a trailer on welfare with a steady parade of dirt bag boyfriends. Are you going to ruin your own life now because she's pretty now and won't give you the time of day now, but in five or ten years who knows? Right now you kids getting a hard time in school are what? Fifteen? When you're twenty-five, high school won't matter one stitch.

When you leave high school, you can go to university or just plain move away and no one will know about any of the bullies, afternoons in detention, or dateless Saturday nights you had. No one will know or care. High school is officially over and you're life has started anew, so why give it all up at fifteen when you didn't even give life beyond high school a chance? What are you kids doing? What has happened to you that was so much more terrible than what I went through or anyone else has or will go through that you think shooting your classmates is the only answer?

Ever since Columbine in 1999, it seems like gun violence in schools is happening more and more. I know when you're a teenager everything feels like such a big deal, but if you stop and look at it in perspective, I think you'll find that it really isn't. So what if that one girl laughed and said you were a bad kisser and told everyone? So what if the principal is unfair and gave you detention for a week over a silly prank? Most people live to be over 80 years old, and right now you've only experienced a fraction of that span, so don't you think sometime in those seventy years you'll be able to turn things around? You could very well go on to be happily married, own a nice house and run your own successful business, but you won't know if you don't even try. All you have to do is put up with the psychological torture for four measly years and you're good to go.
