:: Today's soundtrack: The Misfits "Astro Zombies" ::

For the celebration of Halloween, the o most sacred of holidays, most people are under the impression that you have to watch scary movies to get in the proper mood. That unless you're getting the pants scared off of you, you just aren't honouring the holiday correctly. I'm here to tell everyone once and for all and definitely, that this simply isn't so. There are plenty of good ol' fashioned funny movies available which can carry on the Halloween motif flawlessly.

Shaun of the Dead. A modern Halloween classic if ever there was one. If zombie movies give you the creeps, you can rest easy here. Yes there are veritable mobs of the flesh eating undead and the violence that goes along with it, but you'll be too busy laughing to notice. Every moment of this film is hysterical, from the guy swatting down the pigeons in the background, to the woman in the backyard, and even the stand off in the pub when things get heavy. Just remember: "Don't say the zed word!"

Young Frankenstein. An old horror idea gets a revamp in a hilarious way thanks to Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder (and with giant heaping helpings of Marty Feldman). This movie is filled to bursting with a talented cast giving their most comedic performances. You wouldn't think a cart full of corpses could be funny, but turns out it is.

Ghostbusters. A film with hauntings, ghostly possession, the pending apocalypse and of course, scientists is perfect for this holiday. This film features Bill Murray at his finest (you Caddyshack lame-os need to get over yourselves) and funniest. This one is packed with hilarious one-liners you'll be quoting for weeks. "Dogs and cats living together; MASS HYSTERIA!"

Plan 9 From Outer Space. Dubbed "the worst movie ever made" by the world at large, this spooky sci-fi is best viewed for its awfulness. Watch this one with a crowd and good times can be had by all. See that tombstone? That's right, it just fell over. Those flying saucers? Yeah, you can really sense the string, there. Don't even get me started on actors Tor Johnson (yes, Mexican wrestlers make TERRIFIC actors! *snort*) and Vampira.

Various episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Okay, so not a movie, per se, but it's LIKE watching a movie with three really funny guys in the room. Suitable Halloweeny episodes include: Zombie Nightmare, Samsom versus the Vampire Women, The Unearthly, Laser Blast, and a personal favourite, The Incredible Melting Man.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Okay, maybe I'm the only one who finds the original from the 1970s to be hilarious. I can't get over it. Right from the start with the hitchhiker explaining the cow slaughter process right up until the hostage dinner party, this is probably one of the funniest unintentionally funny movies ever made. But then, I'm twisted like that.

So who says Halloween HAS to be a blood spattered fright fest? I find that one of the main points of the holiday is unabashed FUN, so why not watch a terrific comedy? Now go forth my shpookies and have one hilarious Halloween!

William (frightfully fun)
